ABOUT THE USCHPA

The U.S. Clean Heat and Power Association (USCHPA) brings together diverse market interests to promote the growth of clean, efficient CHP in the United States.  It is a private, non-profit association, formed in 1999 to promote the merits of CHP and achieve public policy support. View Association Bylaws (Tax ID No. 52-2147609).

The USCHPA documents the benefits of CHP to the public and decision-makers, creating a new industry focused on CHP. USCHPA sponsors conferences and workshops and prepares reports and releases to educate the public about CHP. We create opportunities for our members to network with each other and key government officials. USCHPA participates in federal agency programs to promote CHP and clean distributed energy. In particular, we are committed to the CHP Program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the CHP Partnership Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The USCHPA, in coordination with DOE and EPA, has published a series of consensus documents on the barriers and potential solutions to deploying more combined heat and power in the US. The USCHPA revisits the state of CHP annually at CHP Roadmap Conferences and Policy Day Workshops. Below are several national consensus documents that have been produced thus far from this process.

(Outcomes of the June 1999 Vision Workshop, published in September 1999)
  • CHP Roadmap document (PDF 2.3 MB) (Outcomes of the 1st National CHP Roadmap Workshop in October 2000, published in March 2001)

USCHPA Mission: Create a regulatory, institutional and market environment that fosters the use of clean, efficient CHP as a major source of electric power and thermal energy in the U.S.

USCHPA Goal: Double the contribution of CHP to the nation's power supply (46GW in 1998 to 92GW by 2010).

Membership: The USCHPA serves its members as they advance their own businesses to create and use CHP, creating opportunities for members to serve each other and participate in federal programs. USCHPA keeps its members up to speed on issues and industry developments.

WHO SHOULD JOIN THE USCHPA? Industrial energy users, district energy users, commercial and institutional building owners and managers, equipment suppliers, system developers, energy service providers, academic experts, consultants, and public interest and environmental leaders. Organizing Committee: The formation of the USCHPA in 1999, signaled the commitment of its members to deploy efficient, low-polluting technologies throughout the country. The association advocates that combined heat and power receive recognition by U.S. federal, state and local governments as a key environmental and economic development strategy. The founding members are Solar Turbines (subsidiary of Caterpillar), Dow Chemical, Trigen Energy, and the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. Founding Associate Members include the Northeast-Midwest Institute and the Energy and Environmental Study Institute.   Please see the USCHPA Links page for a complete list of Member Organizations.
